Stephen Robert Caplan was born in Detroit Michigan and attended Michigan State University where he graduated with a Criminal Justice degree in 1985. Planning to go into the FBI, Stephen began attending law school at Mercer University in Georgia where he graduated in 1989. After deciding against an invitation into the FBI, he began practicing law in Georgia with a sole practioner where he was exposed to a wide variety of different legal cases, including bankruptcy.
After taking and passing the Florida Bar, Stephen moved to Florida in 1990. He worked for a bankruptcy attorney until the end of 1991 when he opened his own practice, specializing in bankruptcy. A couple of years later, Mr. Caplan also began practicing in family law.
Mr. Caplan retains his Georgia Bar membership along with Florida. He is a member of the Orange County Bankruptcy Association, the Central Florida Bankruptcy Law Association and the Florida Bar Family Law Section. Mr. Caplan was invited to become a member of the prestigious Central Florida Family Law Inns of Court where he has been an active member since its first year of inception.
Mr. Caplan was an active participant in the Boy Scouts Explorer Program where he tutored high school boys and girls interested in the practice of law on a monthly basis and was briefly involved in the Big Brothers – Big Sisters Program. He has also done volunteer work for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, attending events and doing all of their photography for several years. He is currently an active member of the Florida Citrus Sports foundation where he does charity work and scouts college football teams for the Capital One Bowl and the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando.
He has spoken at various seminars in the areas of bankruptcy and family law as well as written seminar materials. He has handled thousands of bankruptcy cases over the years mainly for the debtor but has also done some creditor work.
